My Rating:

“We are lucky. For most of us, famine, plague, economic depression, and other life-threatening catastrophes are the stuff of history books. We’re living in an era with the highest-ever rates of longevity, education, and wealth. Cars drive us home as our phones entertain us before we arrive to food delivered to the front door. We have it all!

But there’s just one side effect. We no longer have the tools to handle failure…or even perceived failure. When we fall, we lie on the sidewalk crying. When we spill, we splatter. When we crack, we shatter.

We are turning into an army of porcelain dolls.

A rude email from the boss means calling in sick. Only two likes on our post means we don’t have friends. Cell phones show us we’re never good enough. Yesterday’s butterflies are tomorrow’s panic attacks. Record numbers of students have clinical anxiety. And what about depression, loneliness, and suicide?

All rising!

What do we desperately need to learn?

RESILIENCE. And we need to learn it fast.”

The tools to be more resilient

You Are Awesome is broken down into 9 chapters, each dedicated to his 9 “secrets” to being more resilient. These include tips such as seeing every problem as a step to something else, confessing what you mentally bottle up inside and viewing failure as part of success.

This last one I really enjoyed. Being a self-proclaimed self-help junkie, one thing I’ve learned from other people is that you have to fail a dozen times to succeed. Neil Pasricha touches on this in his 5th secret along with some relatable stories we can all learn from. Being someone who has failed a lot, he is someone qualified to help us all live a little more intentionally.

Extremely easy to digest

What I loved about You Are Awesome was how easy it was to read and digest. The format of the book is ideal and I wish more authors followed this example.

As I mentioned, it’s broken down into 9 secrets, which are his points for being more resilient. They begin with a story, either from his own personal experience or someone he knows. He then follows each story with how it has taught him about resilience and the actionable steps to apply his lesson.

Each secret is about 30 pages, which makes this book easy to digest in chapters. This is exactly what I did. I finished the book in just a week (because some days I would read two secrets…I couldn’t stop!).

Pasricha gives practical advice

Compared to other self-help books I’ve read, which often have a lot of woo-woo, I found Neil Pasricha’s advice really practical. The actionable steps he shares with each section is something you can easily apply to your everyday life.

One tip I borrowed from his book almost immediately was his “two-minute morning”. This was an actionable step to help with mental release. In the section, Pasricha explains that confessing what we never admit out loud can help us be more resilient and worry less. However, it’s not always realistic that we can share this with a complete stranger, so Pasricha came up with the “two-minute morning”. Each morning he writes down three things to help his mind let go, stay positive and focus on what’s important. He uses these prompts:

  • I will let go of…
  • I am grateful for…
  • I will focus on…

I loved this simple idea, and it’s one of the practical secrets I took away from the book!

His advice is backed by science

Not only is his book practical, but Pasricha has also done his research while writing You Are Awesome. Each section is backed by science and research studies. A book that’s incredibly easy to digest AND is backed by scientific studies is golden! As a result, you don’t have to worry about rereading sections to get his point because his writing style is easy to understand. With the addition of research, you know his advice has merit and he knows what he’s talking about.

The stories are very relatable

If you haven’t gotten this point by now, Neil Pasricha’s book is very relatable. He shares a lot about his own personal struggles from graduating from university, to landing an amazing first job (and failing hard), divorce and time management conflicts.

His writing style comes across as very down-to-earth as if you could be friends with Pasricha if you met him on the streets somewhere. As a result, the book is like sitting down with a good friend who gives great advice.

I gave You Are Awesome: How to Navigate Change, Wrestle with Failure, and Live an Intentional Life by Neil Pasricha 5 of 5 stars. It is well deserved and I recommend grabbing a copy.

It has everything I like in a book:

  • It’s an interesting read with relatable stories
  • The tips are practical and not too woo-woo
  • The book is easy to digest and a fast read
  • The points are backed by research
  • The advice is much needed
