Revisiting Your Pinterest Marketing Strategy in 2025

If you’re new to Pinterest marketing, you might not have much data to work with yet. But if you’ve been at it for a while, now’s the time to dig into your analytics and see what’s working—and what needs adjusting.

Where To Find Your Pinterest Stats in Google Analytics

To check how Pinterest is driving traffic to your website, head over to your Google Analytics 4 (GA4) dashboard and follow these steps:

  1. Go to Reports > Engagement > Landing Page
  2. In the top right, set the date range to “Last Calendar Year
  3. At the top left (above the chart), select Add Filter
  4. Choose: Dimension is Session Source > Match Type is Contains > in Value type “pinterest”
  5. Click Apply

This will show you which pages on your website received the most traffic from Pinterest and how long visitors stayed on each page.

If you want a big-picture view of your Pinterest traffic:

  1. Go to Acquisition > Traffic Acquisition
  2. Filter the date range and sessions to Pinterest
  3. Look under “Referrals” or “Organic Social” to see how Pinterest traffic has ebbed and flowed over time

You can also view this data in your Pinterest analytics dashboard on Pinterest itself, however, for traffic data and which pins performed best you will only have a 6 month view.

Key Questions To Ask When Reviewing Your Data

Looking at your analytics, you (or your team) should ask:

  • How did our Pinterest performance in 2024 compare to previous years? If this was our first year, what content performed best, and what needs more focus in 2025?
  • Which months brought the most Pinterest traffic?
  • What Pinterest changes from 2019 (or other past years) can we still apply in 2025?
  • Which strategies are no longer working and should be dropped in 2025? (More on this below!)

Why Your Data Matters

Having a few years of data helps you recognize trends—like which seasons bring the most traffic and which content consistently performs well. You’ll also see if any major platform updates or external factors affected your results.

  • Everyone’s Pinterest traffic trends differently—so don’t rely on someone else’s strategy! Your data will tell you when your audience is most active and which content deserves more attention.
  • Since Pinterest is a long-game platform, traffic should gradually increase over time. The more high-quality content you put out, the more traffic you can generate!

Armed with this data and Pinterest’s latest best practices, you can fine-tune your Pinterest marketing strategy in 2025—and stay ahead of the curve.

Where Should You Be Focusing Your Pinterest Marketing Strategy in 2025?

With Pinterest constantly evolving, it’s important to focus on what’s working now instead of sticking to outdated tactics. Based on recent changes and best practices, here’s where to put your energy in 2025.

1. Prioritize SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Pinterest is a visual search engine, so just like you optimize your website for Google, you need to do the same for Pinterest to get your content in front of the right people.

For 2025, two key SEO tactics will help you rank higher and increase visibility: strategic keyword use and pinning to relevant boards first.

Do Your Keyword Research!

If you want to succeed on Pinterest in 2025, keyword research has to be part of your strategy.

Even though Pinterest has hidden pin descriptions from some views, they still play a major role in distribution!

“Your descriptions might look different across Pin formats and devices. Sometimes people will see the full description in their feed, and sometimes they’ll only see the Pin title or a few words of the description. No matter what shows in people’s feeds, know that your description is working hard behind the scenes to get your content in front of the right people.”

Where to add keywords: Make sure you use relevant, intent-based keywords in your profile name, bio, board descriptions, pin titles, and pin descriptions.

How to find Pinterest keywords: Type a topic into the Pinterest search bar and note the suggested keywords.

For example, searching “Pinterest strategy” brings up related keywords like “for business,” “for bloggers,” “tips,” and “social media marketing.”

Writing strong Pin descriptions:

  • Your pin description can be up to 500 characters, but the first 50–60 characters are most likely to show in people’s feeds.
  • Avoid keyword stuffing! Write naturally, making sure your description flows as a clear sentence or paragraph.
  • Lead with the most important details, add context, and finish with a call to action (e.g., “Click to read the full guide!”).

Pin To The Most Relevant Boards First

Pinterest categorizes your content based on where you pin it first—so make that first board count.

For example, if you’re pinning a chocolate chip cookie recipe, pin it to your “Cookie Recipes” board first before adding it to a broader “Dessert Recipes” board.

Pro tip: To check if Pinterest is categorizing your content correctly, click on your pin and scroll down. If the suggested related content matches your topic, you’re on the right track! If not, refine your keywords, descriptions, and board selection to improve accuracy.

2. Prioritize High-Quality Fresh Content To Grow & Stay Out Of Pinterest Jail

Your goal as a business owner on Pinterest is to get pinners to see your content as the solution to their problem—whether that’s reading a blog post, subscribing to your email list, or making a purchase.

But here’s the catch: Pinterest is built for users first, not marketers.

That means Pinterest is actively cracking down on spammy behavior and enforcing its Community Guidelines. If you aren’t careful, your account could get flagged—even if you didn’t mean to break the rules.

Going into 2025, the key to long-term success on Pinterest is to share high-quality, fresh content and make sure you’re following the platform’s guidelines.

What Does Pinterest Consider Spam?

According to Pinterest’s Community Guidelines, spam includes:

  • Unsolicited commercial messages
  • Repetitive or unwanted posts
  • Misleading content or behavior
  • Attempts to artificially boost views and other metrics
  • Off-domain redirects, cloaking or other ways of obscuring where a pin leads

Pinterest’s spam filters are aggressive, meaning even legitimate accounts can get flagged if they’re not careful.

How To Avoid Spam Flags & Pinterest Jail

Create High-Quality Fresh Pin Designs

Pinterest has been prioritizing fresh content since 2020—and that still holds true today.

What is “fresh content” on Pinterest?

Fresh content is a new image or pin that hasn’t been shared on Pinterest before.

  • Recycling the same old pins isn’t the best strategy anymore.
  • Instead, focus on creating new pin designs with different images, text overlays, or fresh content your audience is searching for.

Follow Pinterest’s best practices for pin design:

  • Vertical format (1500 x 1000 px)
  • High-quality photo
  • Clear, easy-to-read text overlay that provides context
  • Subtle branding (logos, colors, fonts)
  • Mobile-friendly design (pins should stand out in feeds)

Only save quality content from sources you trust

Pinterest is working hard to crack down on spam accounts, but they still slip through.

One of the easiest ways to accidentally land in Pinterest jail? Pinning content from a spam account.

Pro tip: Before saving or scheduling a pin, glance at the URL. If the URL doesn’t match the brand name or looks suspicious, investigate before pinning. This quick check has saved me from spam so many times!

If you focus on fresh, high-quality content and stay mindful of what you share, you’ll keep your account in good standing—and set yourself up for long-term Pinterest success.

3. Create Multiple Pins For Each Article

There was a time when you could reshare the same pin every few months, and it would keep driving traffic. But those days are gone.

With Pinterest’s ongoing effort to improve user experience, accounts that repeatedly pin the same images are now getting flagged for spam.

We’re sometimes asked whether it’s beneficial to save the same Pin to the same board multiple times. We don’t recommend doing this very often. Repetitive saving can create a disruptive experience and get flagged as spam. If you’ve done this in the past, there’s no need to go back and delete old Pins.

The Strategy For 2025: More Fresh Pins, Less Repetition

Instead of repinning the same image, create multiple fresh pins for each blog post and distribute them across Pinterest.

Why this works:

  • Increases your reach by testing different visuals and messaging
  • Attracts new users who might not have engaged with your previous designs
  • Keeps your account in good standing with Pinterest’s spam filters

To save time, batch and schedule your pins with Tailwind. Their free plan lets you schedule 20 pins a month so you can test it out.

How To Hide Multiple Pins In A Blog Post

Want to create multiple pin designs but don’t want them cluttering your blog post? You can hide them so readers only see one, while still giving them multiple options when they hit the “Pin It” button.

I use Tasty Pins to:

  • Hide extra pins in my blog post
  • Ensure the correct pin descriptions & keywords get pulled
  • Give readers multiple pin designs to choose from

This makes it effortless for visitors to share your best, optimized content—without even thinking about it.

Pro Tip: The more high-quality pin options you provide, the more likely your content will get saved and shared!

4. Video Pins Aren’t As Helpful in 2025 As They Use To Be

Video pins have been around for a while, but they’re not driving traffic like they used to. This shift became more noticeable after the decline of Idea Pins.

That said, this doesn’t apply to all accounts. Some businesses still see success with video pins. The best way to know if they’re working for you? Check your 2024 analytics.

If you notice a steady decline, it may be time to shift your focus elsewhere. But if your video pins are still performing well, keep using them as part of your 2025 Pinterest strategy!

Video Pin Best Practices

If you do use video pins, make sure they’re optimized for engagement. According to Pinterest’s creative best practices, successful video pins should:

  • Be actionable (eg. teach someone something)
  • Start strong with a clear hook in the first few seconds
  • 6-15 seconds for promoted pins, otherwise any length works
  • Be easily understood without audio (eg. text captions)
  • Have a strong cover image to catch someone’s eye in their feed
  • Follow Pinterest SEO with keyword-rich description and title

You can easily create video pins using apps like Wave.Video, Canva, and Audiogram.

Awareness vs. Action: Are Video Pins Worth It?

In my experience, video pins are great for impressions (increasing your reach), but they don’t always translate into website traffic or conversions.

Bottom line: If video pins are still working for you, keep using them. But if they aren’t driving clicks, focus on fresh static pins instead.

5. Create A Seasonal Content Strategy for 2025

In 2025, it’s time to step up your Pinterest marketing by planning your seasonal content in advance. Pinterest users often start searching for holiday or seasonal inspiration months before the actual event.

When it comes to holidays or seasonal events, people use Pinterest to plan long before they turn to other platforms. Remember to factor this timing into your Pinterest content strategy.
We recommend that you start saving seasonal content about 30-45 days in advance. Activity will keep picking up as you get closer to the big day.

Ideally, you should start sharing seasonal content 2-3 months before the holiday. This means in October you would have started sharing Christmas and Holiday content and in December content related to being your best self and Valentine’s Day.

If you sell products or services related to specific seasons create a content calendar specifically for Pinterest.

They make it easy to find out what’s trending each month with their Pinterest Trends search dashboard. Use these to help guide your content strategy.

Pro Tip: I like to go through old content on my website and create pins for them with seasonal images or colors that will attract seasonal browsers. If the content can be applied to a holiday or event, I might as well take advantage of the increase in traffic by creating fresh pins for it!
